You do not need to spend a lot of money to remind someone you love them. You do not need to buy extravagant gifts to make someone’s day 1000 times better. Sometimes, all you need is to surprise someone with something they didn’t even know they wanted.
Around 2pm today, I started getting tired. Nothing new, just normal food-coma after lunch tired.
“I’m tired,” I messaged my boyfriend.
“Aww…” G commiserated. “Do you want coffee?”
“Yes,” I told him, my mind still trying to solve my current work problem.
“I’m down the street on a sales call,” he wrote back. I didn’t even have a chance to respond to this because I was so busy.
Half an hour later, I got a call.
“You have a visitor in the lobby,” the receptionist told me. I thanked her and told her I’d be right down, slightly irritated because I still couldn’t solve my work problem. I started down to the lobby, curious. I knew it had to be G since no one else would show up at my work. Dare I hope?
As I opened the door to the lobby, I saw him. Standing there, holding a drink from Starbucks. A grin broke out on my face.
“What is this?” I asked.
“You said you were tired,” he answered, smiling at me.
It took less than $5 for me to be flooded with happiness, feeling love overwhelm me. I kissed him and all my worries of the day flew away.
I wanted to tell the receptionist, “We live together! I saw him this morning and I’ll see him in a few more hours. We’ve lived together for a couple years now. We’ve been dating for NINE years. Nine years and he still surprises me like this.”
Sometimes, it’s the small things that matter. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to show your love to someone. In fact, you really don’t have to spend any money. In this case, it took less than $5 for my day to go from ordinary to extraordinary and for me to be bursting at the seams with love for this man.

That’s so sweet and very thoughtful. It’s always nice when you’re together for a long time and your partner can still surprise you. It makes you fall in love all over again. Anyone who brings me coffee, gets major brownie points for sure

This is so true! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been working on the yard only to look up in excitement to see my wife with a frozen coffee drink! It doesn’t take much money to let someone know you’re thinking about them.

That is SO sweet. J used to bring me frozen yogurt at work all of the time, even though I worked next door to the froyo store. That’s awesome.

Great story about how a small purchase can go a long way. Those small gifts are much better than the times of year when society tells you that you need to be buying something for your loved one. The spontaneous ones actually show that they really care.

Aw, what a sweet guy! Good example that not all ‘unnecessary’ purchases are bad purchases. I’m happy you found a guy that is always finding ways to make you smile

What a good guy! I need to get back to doing those little things for my wife. I’ve become such a slacker!
He puts me to shame.
You’re right though: it’s the thought that counts. You don’t ever have to spend a lot of money to do something extremely meaningful.

That’s very sweet! I recieved $2 beef jerkey once and was over the moon with happiness. He knows I love it and bought it to cheer me up–because it’s defintely the thought that counts.

What a lovely gesture! I struggle with little purchases like this, even as gifts. I think that confounds my husband a bit – he’s less stingy and more of a “gift person.” I should really loosen up and do some things like this for him.

When I was younger, I was all about showing those around me I cared for them by buying them extravagant gifts. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized it really is the thought that counts. Now I listen more closely and feel more closely connected to everyone in my life. Most of the gifts I give now are more of my time than of my money, and everyone is blown away with the thoughtfulness behind them.

This truly falls into the category of “It’s the thought that counts”. The only thing I don’t like about this post is now I want a Mocha frappe from Starbux. Damn you
